Yeouch.

The reason you are not able to do anything is that explorer is pretty much the main component of windows.

Often times it can be corrupted by viruses, spyware or even bad memory.

To fix it, it would be best to run a full on windows repair. To do this just follow the directions here:

That will recopy all the essential files, just in case it is not only explorer that is damaged.

Yes, that's bad. It's totally logical that you can't access desktop, control panel, taskbar... because that's all explorer stuff. It seems that you can kick your explorer into the recycle bin. Repair your windows with the setup cd. The directest way would be to start windows in restore mode (I don't know how exactly it's named but you've just got the DOS screen to work) and overwrite your explorer with a correctly-working one.
not good at all...

first, like you said, if you can access the task manager, close in the Process tab explorer.exe if it is opened and after go to File-%26gt; new task(run..) and type explorer or explorer.exe . this should restore your desktop, hopely for the moment.

the others said something about reinstalling from cd or searching for a solution on internet tutorials. from what I know, explorer.exe usually breaks down when attacked by viruses or a bad program installation, maybe. if you could connect the hardware to an other computer and overwrite the explorer.exe with a new one, maybe your problem wil be solved faster!

good luck!
