Couldn't "answer" my own question, so here goes: the error box reads something like this: IE has encountered a problem and must shut down. We are sorry for any inconvenience, blah, blah, blah. I can click on Debug or Details but neither of those help me make this stop happening. I can move the box down off of the screen but after a while I can only close everything down and have to restart.
Thank you for any assistance for this is so very annoying.

Firefox is free and can be used at the same time as IE, it's much smaller than IE, has anti popups etc so why struggle?

Using Internet explorer? After the last security update, it became unusable, with all of the symptoms you described.
I'm using Mozilla Firefox almost exclusively now, with a bunch of plug ins and even the yahoo companion toolbar. Haven't had any problems since.
There is only one way to resolve this problem, I f you are using IE6 then search your computer for ie6.inf and right click on it and choose install option in the menu that appears. It will prompt you to insert windows xp cd. then follow on screen instructions. This should help you resolve the problem.
If it doesnt resolve then try using browsers like Maxthon which run with the IE files and are extremely stable.
I have the same problem. Mine turns out to be a DNS problem. I'm still trying to figure out how to put the right address in. Forget Verizon they will tell you to call your PC company.
IE always has this problem. Use Fire Fox instead.
May be a supported DLL file for IE have corrupted and that could be a reason why its giving you this error. Try to re-install IE.
